Twelve fire engines and around 80 firefighters were called to a fire at a waste storage centre on Benedict Road, Mitcham.
A large stack of rubbish was alight Station Manager Chris Line, who is at the scene, said: “The fire is now under control but firefighters will remain at the scene throughout the day to continue damping down and turning over remaining pockets of fire.
“This is likely to create smoke in the local area and we would continue to urge residents to please keep their doors and windows shut.
“There is some disruption to roads in the local area as a result of the fire and we would kindly ask motorists using the roads close to the waste storage centre to please not drive over our hoses as firefighters are still using them on the fire.”
The Brigade was called at 2017 (on March 17) and the fire was under control by 1123 on March 18.
Firefighters from Mitcham, Wimbledon, Sutton, Norbury and other surrounding fire stations are at the scene.
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
